Zurückgebaut (2017–)

«The photographs show the Rhenish lignite mining area with its torn up landscape and its abandoned and newly built houses in an unreal state of transition, strangely repulsive and downright hostile to life. Old connections have been severed, grown structures have been erased, current ones do not (yet) exist. Here, everything seems to be functionally and pragmatically subordinated to the exploitation of a resource whose use has already become obsolete and is driving the destruction of the earth. It is no coincidence that the transitional state captured in the photographs congeals into a desolate stasis. Even the new single-family homes do not speak of a spirited departure, but of a petty-bourgeois and coolly calculated settling into a battered and silenced world.» – Susanne Witzgall

– Susanne Witzgall
